How to Wear a Kaftan

A kaftan is one of the few things that works for a morning at home and an evening out with nothing more than a change of shoes.

The short kaftan

  • Everyday — over straight cotton trousers or leggings, flat sandals
  • Summer — on its own as a tunic with wide-leg linen
  • Travel — over jeans with a light scarf

The long kaftan

  • At home — on its own, nothing else needed
  • Out — with a slim belt at the waist to give it shape, and heeled sandals
  • Evening — chiffon with a slip, gold jhumkas, hair up

The kaftan set

The set decides the outfit for you. Add earrings and go. For a wedding or Eid, a Tilla-style set with gold thread does not need anything else.

A few things that always work

  • Keep jewellery simple when the embroidery is heavy
  • Let a loose kaftan stay loose — belting everything defeats the cut
  • Chiffon always needs a slip or inner
  • Flat sandals for day, heels for evening — the same kaftan reads differently
